There was a moment at his introductory press conference when Mike Singletary got going. He used to be a motivational speaker and now he was on a roll.
He was saying how Mike Nolan had built the foundation for the team and as Singletary's voice rose, he intoned, "You take a step back and go, 'Wow,' I'm going to continue to help Mike (Nolan) build this, and wherever God leads, that's where I'm going to go."
I'll skip a few sentences and come to the second God reference. He said, "I believe that with God I can do anything."
I am not here to make fun of Singletary's faith. I admire people of faith and I admire Singletary. But I don't know how he knows God will help him beat other teams. Did God speak to Singletary? Does God like Singletary more than other coaches, more than Mike Holmgren who will be at Candlestick on Sunday? Is God a Niners' fan?
Singletary raised these issues whether or not he knew it. I admire his faith but I wonder about his theology. I'm not the only one. Years ago I wrote a book about Bill Walsh and on page 161 he spoke about God and sports. I'll give the entire lengthy quotation because it is relevant to Singletary:
"I hope to keep it (religion) within normal expression, rather than take it a step further into Christian dialogue, giving yourself to the Lord. There are some that let this thing get out of context. It's where you get the very vocal person, let's say of the Christian faith, who wants to make this a vehicle to have people give their lives to the Lord instead of play football. I can remember Bubba Paris after we'd just busted our ass -- guys were broken, bleeding, hurting -- we finally came back in 1988 and won the division and the championship and I can't remember what game it might have been, but Bubba had to tell the press that the Lord just did that, won the game for us.
"The Lord did it? I mean, maybe He did, to each person, He anointed every player or something. But why would He do it for us and not for the other team? What kind of a Lord is that? A lot of guys were really disgusted with Bubba for that, not mad, just, 'Yuck, get away, you jerk.' Because these guys had really worked and humped and come back, and now suddenly, the Lord stepped in and did it? In other words, if they hadn't sacrificed, it was going to happen anyway.
"That's offensive as heck to me. Whoever He is -- or She is -- He must have higher goals than deciding who's going to win a football game, because there are about thirty million starving to death within ten hours on an airplane ride. So He comes over to the stadium and helps, Jeez, it's ridiculous."
That's a strong quote from Walsh about faith and football. I'm sure Singletary believes in hard work and all that. But I don't believe God will make him a winning coach. I believe God is looking out for all coaches on all sides of the ball.

Comment: Lowell,
Where were you at Singletary's press conference today? Maybe you were there, but you should have at least congratulated the man on his win. Now you just look like a coward. You said you would be there every week, but the first time Singletary wins after your little tiff, you don't show up.
You can say all you want about "Follow your own mantra, Mike. Don't tell me. Show me.", but the one thing you can't deny is that Mike Singletary is a MAN. He gives credit where credit is due, and takes the blame when he deserves it.
Had you shown up/spoken at the press conference, taken your lumps as Singletary would have, and been good-natured about the whole thing, I, and many other people, probably would have had a lot more respect for you and seen you in a different light. But you didn't. You, obviously, are not a man. Run and hide, Lowell. You've pissed off Mike Singletary, and even you are smart enough to know that won't end well for you.

Comment: hey lowell, i know that religeous beliefs are slowly being pushed out of the corporate (and even national) landscape, but as the great singer-poet bob dylan once wrote; 'you got to serve somebody' still rings true today. if a person has developed a personal relationship with their object of religeous belief it is their constitutional right. as i recall m-singletary was not proselytizing in any way, shape or form. we don't make a 'stink' about an artist thanking God during award ceremonies, or our oft-used phrase "oh my God!" but suddenly we are super-sensitive when a coach invokes the name of God during a news conference; give me a break! it seems that the media goes out on 'hunting spree's to find and create controversy. the media criticized m-noland for his machanical and stoic comments and answers during his recent news conferences, now it seems that you found a new person to 'brow-beat' based on his religeous beliefs. remember lowell, what's at stake here is the game on the playing field. let's judge m-singletary on that criterion, not on what he chooses to believe. if you choose to be intolerant toward religion that's your right as well, but creating a story simply because someone invokes God's name is sadly reaching for straws.

Comment: I think the press in this area should be flagged 15 yards for piling on....Its almost like they didn't see this firing coming and they all called for it...(Ralph B interview with McCloughan on KNBR was one of the worst things I've heard_)

Comment: I for one am sick of these bitter, living-in-the-past, Walsh obsessed "journalists" like Cohn, Ratto, Killion, Kawakami. Do I miss the Walsh days? OF COURSE I DO! But did you ever hear what Walsh said about those days? "IT WAS CAMELOT". You can't just recreate that by hoping for it. Did Nolan suck? Yes. Does McCloughan? Probably. BUT GET OVER THE PAST AND WALSH. You all sound so miserable and bitter.

Comment: Thanks for your response, Mr. Cohn.
You have to read the whole piece written by Holmgren himself to show how Holmgren looks to God as his guide, just like Singletary.
Now the comment from Bubba Paris is the one which is not the same.
Here is the link I found.

Comment: This is from Mike Holmgren way back...
"Eventually, the media began to speculate that I would be offered the head coaching position of an NFL team, and I began to pray. When the offers came, it was clear to us that the needs of our daughters took precedence over my career, and I opted to stay with the Forty-Niners. Sportswriters and colleagues scoffed, but God honored our choice. Later, at the right time for our family, I was hired by the Green Bay Packers to carry the mantle of legendary head coach Vince Lombardi."
You're the one who raises THIS issues, so I googled for a couple of minutes and found the above comments from Holmgren to show this is quite common is sports.
Make sure you RAISE THIS ISSUE w/ Holmgren, who I also want to see back w/ the Niners, when you talk to him.
I guess Singletary is the new target now.
Response: I appreciate your response and am impressed you did this research. Singletary is not the new target. I wish him well and hope he succeeds. I believe what he said deserves fair comment, and I don't think Holmgren's statement is the same as Singletary's. If you disagree, go in peace.
