Who Should be New 49er QB?

J.T. O'Sullivan will not do. He is a backup quarterback masquerading as a starter. The 49er coach next season -- whoever he is -- must have a new starting QB. Iggy suggests Matt Cassell of the Patriots. This, to me, is a heck of a suggestion.

Monday night against Denver Cassell threw for three TDs and had zero picks. That's a lot better than the Niners' guy nicknamed Just Turn Overs.

Iggy tells me that Cassell is a free agent after this season and the Patriots may not be able to re-sign him after Tom Brady comes back. He says if the Niners can get Cassel they will have a good NFL quarterback and they can draft a quarterback whom they can develop. If they can't get Cassell, they should get someone like him. They need a QB.

Iggy goes further. He says the Niners should bring in Pete Carroll as head coach/football czar. Carroll coached Cassel at USC, so this is interesting. Iggy and I both believe the 49ers need a football czar over Scot McCloughan. Carroll is a Marin native and was Niner defensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996, so he has 49er roots. "He even looks like Bill Walsh," Iggy told me.

I don't think Carroll will want to leave USC, but you never know.

The point is the 49ers have some nice pieces already -- a great running back and one great linebacker, for sure. But they will get nowhere without a quarterback.

Comment: CrovaNiner Fan - are you serious with half of those QB's you're talking about? Three of them aren't even 6 feet tall... no - Doug Flutie types can't succeed in the NFL anymore when their guards and centers are 6'6 how will they see anything? Tebow has great size but is extremely inacurate. Sam Bradford is interesting - and again the Nate davis fans of the world I think are on to something... he looks good... realy good..

Comment: Why not give Alex Smith another shot. He wants to play again and Norv Turner showed he could be developed. If Martz isn't having second thoughts about O'Somebody, he should.

Comment: Cassel could be a good candidate. Agree, we need more stability at the position until the rookie has a chance to develop. A couple of other potential FA's that might be worthy are Kyle Orton & Luke McCown. Since we're talking about drafting another franchise guy, who're some of the potential candidates? Of the seniors, I see Chase Daniel and Graham Harrell with what look like NFL-caliber skills. There are some underclassmen, like Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Texas' Colt McCoy, KU's Todd Reesing, Tim Tebow, Ok St's Zach Robinson, GA's Matt Stafford, BYU's Max Hall just to name a few.

Comment: I suggest Carrol because I think Holmgren is too old, and Bill Cowher has nothing to do with west coast football. He has no ties to the 49er tradition, and as a 49er fan, I'm proud of what the 49ers used to represent, and I'd like a coach that continues that lineage in some fashion. So Carroll fits. As for Cassell, he won't be the franchise qb, but there's no way the niners can get that guy this offseason. I guarantee the niners don't draft a qb in the 1st round unless its a no brainer for a long time, and the niners won't be in a position to draft a no brainer type this year. They should sign someone who could make the team competitive right away, to give the fans something to be excited for. That could be cassell, I think it will be Cassell, but we'll have to watch the rest of the season to see how he plays down the playoff stretch. Another option is David Garrard, but I assume he stays in jax. The last option would be to trade for a qb. Bottom line is, someone who currently is not on the 49ers roster and is not currently enrolled in a universtiy should be the starting qb next year.

Comment: Earth to Matt. Mike Singletary is the new head coach, not Pete Carroll. Grow a brain. Let's say you just got hired by some major newspaper as their sports editor and some jerk writes that some clown working for another paper is more suited for your job than you? Mike Singletary is brilliant. Not just smart, but brilliant. He is a leader of men and they'll go all out to perform for him. It takes more to be a good coach than just making good decisions which Nolan never did. It takes a man with the kind of character that makes the players want to go to the wall for him. Singletary, like Walsh, has that mystique. Keep this column, and read it again in two months.

Comment: Pete Carroll was also the defensive coordinator for the 49ers defense when they were at their best. If they can get Pete Carroll, and Cassell (who, incidentally have a history) it would be great I think. But really the problem for this TEAM (aside from ownership) is the O LINE COACH. Since Bob McKittrick died, there has not been a powerful O Line in SF. They cannot protect any QB they had. Garcia was probably the best QB they had since Montana; but Garcia was running for his life all the time. It doesnt matter who the QB is when they are on their back with defenders on top of them.

Comment: I agree, matt cassel wouldn't be a good pick. Id he is succesful in NE is .ecause his OC, josh mcdaniels he is argublyt the best O cordinatos in the NFL. He knows cassel cant get the job done so what does he do he throws screen passes to randy moss and short passes to wes welker. We do need to draft a QB like Marco Sanchez.

Comment: matt cassell is not good, he holds on to the ball way to long, takes sacks and isn't particularly accurate. he had a decent stat line because the broncos play awful defense, and because he has arguably the best supporting cast in the league. Im sure JTO would appear a servicable quarterback if he was playing for the pats, had bill belicheck coaching him, and knew the system. the niners need to draft a quarterback and start over new. Luckily, this time we take a quarterback he will actually have some weapons around him. So if we make a good choice that player will actually have a good shot at succeeding early on. See matt ryan.

Comment: I heard Adam Schefter say the same thing, Pete Carroll; there's only one thing wrong with this desert island fantasy- it's just a dream. Wake up! Pete carroll is just the kind of self absorbed egotist we don't need. Also, he'll be gone as soon as he gets a bad feeling. Contracts don't mean anything to these college prima donnas. I also don't think we need him, let him fail in college, not here for $megabucks he'll want.

Comment: John and lucky sperm Jed will never spend the money needed to bring in a Carroll or Holmgren. The best case for 49er fans would have the Yorks moving the team to that new stadium in Los Angeles, the city of San Francisco, like Cleveland did, sueing to keep the the 49er name, and within 2 or 3 years Larry Ellison brings the new 49ers back. The real problem with the 49ers is ownership!

Comment: You are joking right, Matt Cassel???? Your opinion is no longer valid. Put a start a player with minimal starting experience and expect him to suceed. Sound familiar??? (JTO)

Comment: Lowell even though you pay for your son to go to a school in LALA land he is turning out alright. I think his suggestions are brilliant. I also like the idea of Mike Holmgren in the role of President. I think he would do well in that capacity. Carroll and Holmgren are fan pleasers and give people a reason to hope and dream. That was Nolan's cardinal sin, as he no longer had the ability inspire hope. Basically professional sports are entertainment and mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Sports is an escape from reality a few hours a week, period. When your sport of choice isn't helping you do that you get mad at the people you are watching (and you get some of the response you see in your blog). Love the reality check in the previous blog as well. I think it's better to be clinical rather than emotional when you look at matters like this. From a business perspective as well as a "getting better" perspective those are decent suggestions. I am still willing to see what Mike Singletary. can do this season however. Instead of debating it, we have the opportunity to see if he's the "right stuff". If the ownership had hired Brian Bullock we might be discussing that they should have waited to see who's available at the end of the season i.e., "what's the rush?" They have some time to try to get it right, let's see if they can. <not holding my breath>

Comment: cassell isn't the answer. That's ridiculous. The guy has one decent game - after three horrible ones - and he's ready to be a franchise QB? Hardly. And Pete Carroll's proven that he can lose in the NFL. Again and again. He'll never leave USC.
