Readers of the Cohn Zohn tell me I'm too hard on the 49ers. Here's a reality check. I am not a fan. I tell the truth as I understand it. And what I understand after today's weird, rambling inconclusive news conference introducing Mike Singletary is that the Niners don't have the semblance of a plan.
I mean, you'd expect a real professional outfit to project to the end of the season, to know if they will retain general manager Scot McCloughan, to know if they plan to retain Singletary or make him compete with other candidates, if they plan to get a new quarterback to replace JTO -- Just Turn Overs.
Nothing.
I asked Jed York who was there subbing for his dad, the big Yorker. And why in the world was John York not in attendance at a time like that? I asked Jed if the Niners have a plan to bring in a new team president after the season, someone to oversee the whole operation.
I was thinking of Mike Holmgren. I know I wrote earlier he should be coach. Scratch that. That's small potatoes. Let him be the Niner football czar in charge of talent, the GM and the coaches. He has a vision. No one currently on the Niners has a large vision.
So what did Jed say when I asked if the team will bring in a president from the outside? "We haven't discussed that?"
Haven't discussed that? Well what in the world did they discuss?
"Hey, Scot let's go out and buy some Big Whoppers and Cokes."
My God, the team is at a crossroads -- again -- and has not projected ahead a few months.
Pathetic. No wonder the 49ers never make any progress.

Comment: I for one am sick of these bitter, living-in-the-past, Walsh obsessed "journalists" like Cohn, Ratto, Killion, Kawakami. Do I miss the Walsh days? OF COURSE I DO! But did you ever hear what Walsh said about those days? "IT WAS CAMELOT". You can't just recreate that by hoping for it. Did Nolan suck? Yes. Does McCloughan? Probably. BUT GET OVER THE PAST AND WALSH. You all sound so miserable and bitter.

Comment: waht do you expect, they said they fired him only becasue it might be a distraction to the team to keep nolan. ( referring to his need to win the seattle game) After all his pitiful coaching they still thought he was a good.

Comment: Good job Lowell tell it like it is. A lot of these clueless fans, mostly under the age of 25, don't know much. This organization is broke at the top and don't get anything right. All the real, long time niner fans think this is a joke. Good job.

Comment: Not only are you not a fan, but you actually dislike the 49ers, which is evident by the constantly anti-49er bias that shows up in your commentaries.
From one broadcast journalist to another, that is not writing the truth; that is editorializing your opinion. You want truth? Be honest about what you are writing.
You are a biased commentator and therefore should not be writing about this team.
Response: I find your comment extremely interesting. Raiders fans insist I have a distinct 49er bias.

Here's where I disagree with you. First of all, there is no gain in the 49ers admitting that they will have a fresh coaching search at the end of the year, even if they have a plan. After all, why not let Singletary just coach and see what he has to offer. You always have the option of looking for a coach at the end of the year (plus it does not preclude from you from still compiling a list and start having private conversations starting today). Plus you look more open minded that way, given the Rooney rule for a coaching search
In any science experiment, you always only change one variable at a time. While you could argue that Mike Nolan had to be fired at the end of last year, the brass clearly decided that elevating Scot to GM was the variable they wanted to change in January (realizing they were out of their league in hiring/firing coaches) and having him decide the fate of Mike Nolan was the right thing to do. This is Scot's move all the way and one cannot disagree with it.
While I agree that Holmgren would be a good hire for GM, I still feel the area that this team has been most abysmal at is coaching. One area that I would like to see you explore is the relationship between coaching and player development. For e.g. are we accentuating the strengths of our players while minimizing their weaknesses. I think Nolan has been very poor at assembling a staff (Billy davis, Mike Martz, Warhop) and that has stunted the growth of the players. for e.g. pro football weekly had a comment from a scout that said "never have I seen a team with so many players out of position as the 49ers" I think that reflects poorly on the coaching staff.
Next year, it is time for Scot M to bring in a power house coaching staff and see how the players he has drafted develop
People fault the Yorks for many bad decisions, most of them justifiable, but it is also true that in the last 2 years, they have stayed away and let Mike/Scot run the team. You can fault them for giving Mike Nolan too much power but they are learning and I think they finally have it right at least with the Scot M hire as GM. The only thing you can find fault with, IMO is the leak that perhaps accelerated the firing by a week but that is hardly the kind of mistake that is going to doom a franchise. Scot needs to nail his coaching hire next year (and being the straight shooter he is, I think he will)
Would like your thoughts on this
Thanks

Comment: c'mon, lowell, the organization already looks 'bush-league' for informing an espn reporter of nolan's dismissal before possibly bringing it to his attention. why would the yorks, whether 'big york' or son want to disclose any information regarding any more hirings at seasons end in light of their recent faux pas. but honestly, we all have known for weeks now that noland' job security was under the microscope since the beginning of the season, but dismissing noland one game before the bye-week was no doubt caused by a team-insider's inability to keep their mouth shut. nonetheless, the move to hire m-singletary was a good one. in an earlier post, i noted that holmgren would be my last option as head coach. i still hold firm to that opinion, but as a G.M. or team president? well, i happen to wholly agree with you on that.
