49ers Ratted Out Nolan

During today's press conference introducing new/interim head coach Mike Singletary, I asked general manager Scot McCloughan a two-part question.

1. Why did the team allow Mike Nolan to hold his tense, degrading Monday news conference if the Niners knew they would fire him?

2. Did McCloughan think it was appropriate to leak news of Nolan's firing to the media?

Here's what McCloughan said. He told me when Nolan held his noon press conference the 49ers did not know they would fire him the same day.

As crazy as this sounds, I believe McCloughan. I believe him because 49ers management can't plan ten minutes in advance and this screw-up is typical.

McCloughan also said no one from the 49ers leaked anything to the media. This I am suspicious of. Here's what I think happened. After the press conference Nolan went to McCloughan and said he read the team wanted to fire him after next Sunday's Seattle game. McCloughan said yes. Nolan, who has guts, said something like -- then just fire me now.
So the Niners, who were unprepared, fired him. They were so unprepared no one from the organization made an official statement of the firing until 10:15 Monday day -- even though the whole world knew the truth.

So, you bet, I think the Niners ratted out Nolan. My guess is McCloughan was the leaker. Whoever did it, did not allow Nolan the dignity of a polite exit. At the end, Nolan showed more character than the characters around him.

Comment: AAAa! The media drives these witch hunts (mooch,Garcia) and like lemmings the fans jump on the bandwagon and it's the fans who lose in the end. Nolan is a good man and was NOT the main problem! The 9ers are better this year but we just played the 4best teams in the NFL. I met Nolan once and exudes integrity, a caring for the fans and I feel like I just lost a member of the family.

Comment: Mark & John - Im honestly tired of people claiming that Nolan threw Smith 'under the bus'. Kevin Lynch's article today actually clearly conveys what actually happened. The fact is - Smith went to Nolan prior to the fiasco claiming that he didnt feel that he was helping the team and no-longer wanted to start because of it. He additionally said that he was going to publicly criticize the 49er training staff for screwing up his rehab, and Nolan wouldnt let him - and that is where the problem began. All that Nolan did was refuse to allow Smith to use his injury as an excuse for his poor play... and that wasnt something he subjected only Smith to , but the rest of his players as well - 'No Excuses' was a team mantra. So for all of you who claim that Nolan ruined Alex's career, you are completely wrong... And for those of you who claimed he threw Smith under the bus - you clearly dont understand the meaning of the saying. T.O. criticizing McNabb was throwing him under the bus. This was merely forcing Smith to be accountable to himself

Comment: You guys are idiots. The owners and the orginization sucks. Nolan did have more class than the Dorks and the orginization. I think the way you crappy fans and the Dorks treated him is pathetic. Let me guess your all so happy now and your feeling like there is more hope now because they have replaced Nolan with someone with NO head coaching experience at all. I like Singeltary alot but common he isnt proven YET

Comment: you know what whatever. I never thought i would say anything like its ok for a team to fire a coach like this but who is to say that he didnt deserve it. this reminds me of when the kinds fired Adelman and everyone was in an up roar about how it was unprofessional. Well how about when nolan threw the QB of the future under the bus? how about every week when he disrespects reporters and doesnt give straight answers to questions? how about when he blames the players when everyone knows it was the stupid 4-2-5 scheme this great guy came up with. you know what the team may not have handled it right but its not because they didnt tell him and leaked information they handled it wrong because they should have fired this guy last year and not have waited until today.

Comment: This is just more of the Cohn Zone anti-49er propaganda. I will no longer read your editorial comments, since your biased opinions do not reflect my interests, an because of your biases, I have nothing to learn from your editorials.

Comment: Lowell, after the way Nolan had treated Alex Smith, his employee, why should his employer treat him any better? He should not have kept his job last year as it is. At least someone in the building had the good sense to leak the story and end it.
