49ers Should Hire Holmgren

All good luck to Mike Singletary and if he is wildly successful the Niners should put him in a pool of names to compete for the head coach job next season. I doubt he will succeed but he deserves the chance.

I am reading Pete Carroll is a secret aspirant to the job. Good. Fine. But the 49ers should go after Mike Holmgren. Holmgren said he'll take time off after this season in Seattle, said he promised his wife Kathy a sabattical from football. Fair enough. In spite of that, the Niners should do everything in their power to entice him to become their coach. They should court Holmgren and his wife and make her comfortable with this new situation which would be a dream come true for Holmgren, for the organization and the fans.

In spite of his current record, Holmgren is one of the premier NFL coaches and he is in the Bill Walsh line. He will return Niner football to what it should be -- a West Coast Offense team -- and he will restore a sense of history and pride. He is the obvious choice and he has worked with Scot McCloughan in Seattle so the transition would be smooth.

This is a no brainer. Do the Yorks have the brains to pull it off?

Comment: Lowell? Your article is RIGHT ON! But you also were smart enough to write "If York is smart enough." That will be the answer to the article. Look at the team and ALL the moves they have taken since York has taken over from Eddie D? Mike Holmgren will enjoy his time off and be the Head of Football Operations and Coach for another team! PERIOD! Like Ira Miller said when asking Bill Walsh about York. Walsh answered, after a long pause and clearing of the throat, "You don't want to work for him." CASE CLOSED!

Comment: We all know how great Bill Walsh was and what he meant to the franchise and the people. But damn, stop talking about yesterday and start looking at tomorrow. That's what this game is about, anticipation, seeing it happen before it actually does. By clinging to yesteryear the Niners will end up right alongside my Raiders--playing yesterdays football with yesterdays players and coaches. LET THE PAST GO. Stop thinking every coach or player that brushed Bills arm in the hallway is going to save the Niners. Hey, only four more years and the Montanas offspring will be eligible for the draft!

Comment: Lowell, the time to hire Holmgren was 1990, but DeBartolo screwed up. 18 years later, this is not the same Holmgren as was here before...you're falling into the same trap that University of Alabama fell into for so many years -- always trying to reach back to a Bear Bryant disciple. That's a mistake. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, but I'd rather they hire the next Bill Walsh than Mike Holmgren's retirement job.

Comment: lowell, i repectfully disagree with you on bringing in m-holmgren next year. and in refernce to your comment on his current record (in essence not being important, when compared with his history), i disagree with you on that point as well. holmgren, may have a b-walsh connection and even a superbowl pedigree, but what i'm witnessing in seattle right now is the evolution of a tired and burned-out coach. coaches that inspire more wins but can't close the deal on the superbowl (ala schottenheimer, and holmgren in seattle), can create a different sense of frustration. if this team needs a new coach at season's end, i believe we should go after in order: 1. bill cower 2. pete carroll, okay, third choice could be a refreshed m-holmgren, but only as my last option. for now, i'm really excited about m-singletary' promotion and wish him all the best!

Comment: Lowell I used to wish we could acquire Mike Holmgren as a head coach. Part of me still sees him as part of the Packer organization and I have some bitter feelings about those years. <grin> But realistically speaking he looks like he's a great coach when he has a B. Farve on the team (as all coaches do). I compare it to QB's that have a great O-Lines like Ken Stabler did. Ken could sit back in the pocket all day and that's a huge advantage. If you took the HOF O-Line away, all of a sudden he's average. Now correct me if I am wrong but when Mike moved on, he didn't have the great QB or the players. He looked pretty average. I know he made a Super Bowl but the NFC was pretty weak that year. So what we really need is someone who can evaluate football talent and not make mistakes. We need a real GM that can find the diamonds in the rough. If you are looking for someone who is a proven head coach we need someone like Bill Parcells who will come in and clean house. We will never hire Bill, but that's the model. Nolan tried to duplicate that and talked about rebuilding etc., but he didn't brains to make it happen. York really has to do his homework now and make a few more key decisions. Holmgren sounds great and all but I think he's a little burned out and the next guy really needs to dedicate himself to the job for at least a couple of years 24/7.
