At 10:30 p.m. someone from the 49ers finally called me to officially say Mike Nolan got fired and Mike Singletary is interim head coach. There's a press conference noon on Tuesday introducing Singletary.
The press conference will be interesting. Scot McCloughan will say what a great guy Nolan is and how it was difficult to fire him but the team needed to go in another direction.
Nolan deserved what he got. If McCloughan doesn't shape up someone may have to fire him, too.
Singletary will give some speech about how he's going to turn the team around. Don't believe it. He has no head-coaching experience and couldn't get another head-coaching gig in the NFL. John York seems to hire these no-name, no-credentials guys. There's something else. The Niners have a tradition -- West Coast Offense, etc. Singletary is light years away from the tradition. He was a linebacker for the Bears, for heaven's sake. York also is light years away from the tradition. He made the Niners into the un-Niners, made them into something unrecognizable. What a shame.

Comment: Cohn is simply a niner cheerleader, it is all he does, he hangs onto this "tradition" as some form of entitlement to preach about the coach being "a nice guy" how york is "a nice guy" how walsh is his idol. He calls raider cpaches names, delights in insulting al davis. The man is a cheerleader and a hypocrite of the highest degree. Just this morning he is saying people should not feel "animus" for nolan as he is a "good man who did not committ murder" Unbelievable drivel...he sure likes good guys but name calls other guys who I believe also did not committ murder!

Comment: Thats rich Lowell . . . you calling Mike Singletary a "no name". Seriously, did you think about that for a second that you were calling one of the best linebackers ever a "no name" and did you think who am I to be calling him names? Because you should have.

Comment: Saying Singletary won't do any good is saying you know more than the rest of us...and I don't think you do. It's true MS has no head coaching experience...however, as a player he outplayed and outthought his opponents. I see no reason he can't do the same thing as a head coach. He'll make mistakes...all rookie HC's do. But, he'll learn from them and progress. At a minimum, it'll give the York's a chance to see him under fire. If he can inspire the team to play better, great. If not, then they've simply eliminated him from the off-season competition. Neither Manusky nor Martz were good choices...Singletary made the most sense. After all, he is...a leader among men.

Comment: Lowell,
Time for you to respectfully step aside. Your commentary is useless. Let Maiocco be the lone voice on the Niners beat. Please go away.

Comment: lowell cohn is a hater too. what should we do mr cohn? beg for holmgren. well i dont want holmgren. he took at least two super bowls from us. what makes manusky talented enough? what made walsh talented enough? its now how talented you are, its what you do when your in position. you never know what a batter is gonna do until after he gets to the plate. so stop hating and start congratulating. and who knows, maybe this "historically first black coach by default" (that has a ring to it), maybe he puts one one the two black QB's on the roster in a position to help JT out. and now...... "gettin scary with singletary"

Comment: Take it from a Raider fan, the last thing you want to do is cling to tradition forever. You had great years, but that was a long time ago. Pretty funny that a guy working at the Lowelly Press Democrat would say a guy who epitomized intensity, toughness, and intelligence on the field is a "no-name, no credentials guy". Get over yourself, how much worse can it get?
If Singletary can't light a fire under these guys noone can. And just because noone else hired him doesn't mean jack. We all know the NFL is one big fraternity that only recently has made it trendy to hire guys with little or no experience with the headset. I'm with it, I'm so bored with seeing the same old-timers getting passed around from team to team. Bring in the next regime.

No silver lining here. 49ers defense has
been a huge disappointment tnis year.
too many big plays, too few 3rd down
stops, and no pash rush from the D-line.
that was Singletary's responsibility before he tries to play a head coach.
Martz: consistently inconsistent.
Best case scenario, fire Scott M before
the next draft so the top 5 pick is not
wasted again.

Comment: I will be happy to admit I am wrong if Mike Singletary does a bad job the rest of the year. I still like pulling the trigger on the firing because it sends the right message that winning is important and a job requirement. Lowell you might remember that Bill Walsh used to "fire" someone just to get that message across when his team was complacent (of course not a key player). I am not a member of the Niner locker room but I have to imagine that Nolan lost the respect of his team with his poor game management skills, the way he handled Alex Smith, his lack of accountability. Singletary is a Hall of Famer true, but he had an intensity that he can now demand of his players because he himself demonstrated it. I see some lift here. In the mean time if we can hire a coach that fits the system at the end of year that's great. But we couldn't continue down this path and frankly it was time to move on. I'm happy we got it over with. Now let's focus on the future.

Comment: this is the perfect scenario for the niners and m-singletary; its like a live-in relationship for a few months before deciding to get married. let's remember that the niners have not commited to m-singletary beyond the season (at least as of this post). i know he may not be coming in with a shining resume, but if he can bring the same intensity and warrior's mentality to the locker room as he had during his playing career only something good can come out of this. i believe we know at this point and time that this is not a playoff team, so let's see what m.s. can do for the rest of the season, he deserves that chance at the very least.

Comment: I've been reading Lowell Cohn for decades and he is a consistent jerk. Nothing new here. You're so predictable, Lowell. You're like a buzzard eating dead flesh. You have no idea what kind of a coach Singletary would be. Just more Cohn sensationalism. You should have been put out to pasture years ago.

Comment: Give the guy a chance Lowell..I think the main reason he didn't get a HC gig last season was Nolan's abysmal record. (Now the year prior I heard he didn't have his assistants/staff to show). Don't be so negative...THIS IS A GOOD DAY MAN! I can't believe the Yorks actually did something right plus we got a bonus & finally got rid of Warhop too?? On the contrare...are the Yorks finally starting to get it?? Just great news..GO NINERS!!

Comment: Time will tell how Singletary does, but lets remember he was hired as interim head coach. That means its a temp job. Manusky is to green to be a HC and Martz has only been with the team for a few months. Singletary was the obvious choice. Plus elevating him doesn't disrupt the offense or defense to much as he was a position coach. And apparently he has been the assistant coach under Nolan so hopefully has some experience outside of coaching linebackers. Hopefully he didn't pick up any of Nolans bad habits. In the long run we get to test drive Singletary for the remainder of the season. I've also read before that he is very respected by the players so they should play hard for him. It can't get any worse.

Comment: firing nolan was the wrong call. He's a good man and it's McCliughan (mc matt mullen.) Who failed this team. The stats support nolans use of players aside from JTO who by the way is getting killed.

Comment: In my eyes anybody is better then Nowin. As far as the argument that Singletary is not going to be good because other teams didn't hire him is just plain wrong. Its been proven that many of these so-called experts that hire coaches are just as stupid as the Yorks. I think Mike will inspire an under performing team. This is a day of celebration. The excuse maker is gone.

Comment: Lowell,
For the most part I have disagreed with your opinions and have thought you should probably check yourself into the Napa State Hospital. I do however agree with this post. There is no way in hell Singletary is the answer here. There is a reason why he was passed up for those positions. Being a hall of famer doesn't translate into wins!
