Raiders: Liar Liar Pants on Fire

This is getting better all the time. Better in the sense of more ridiculous - but these are the Raiders and anything goes.

I'm saying there was almost a fistfight in the Raiders press room after Lane Kiffin's Monday press conference, a fistfight between a Raiders official and a columnist (not me).

Yee-haw!!

The tension had started a few minutes earlier during the Q&A with Kiffin. My friend Tim Kawakami from the San Jose Mercury asked Kiffin if he feels isolated on the Raiders. Kawakami mentioned an article he said the Raiders passed out to the media critical of Kiffin. From back in the room, Raiders official John Herrera - the one who allegedly passed out the article - interrupted the press conference. This act of interrupting was totally unheard of. Herrera yelled, "That's not true. That's not true, Kawakami."

Kawakami ignored him and so did Kiffin, who seemed mildly amused, and the press conference proceeded in an awkward way. I mean, how could it be the same? It's like you're invited to dinner at your boss's house and your boss has white carpets and you spill a glass of red wine on the carpet. The boss's wife says "Don't worry, it'll clean up," but you know the evening is ruined.

Well, the afternoon over here got ruined - or maybe it got better. You couldn't make up this stuff, and in a weird way, it's fascinating.

When the press conference ended, Herrera started shouting at Kawakami.

"You're a liar," Herrera shouted. "You built a whole column on a lie. So did Lowell Cohn." (Hey, that hurts my feelings, John.)

Kawakami put his hand on Herrera's arm in a peacekeeping soothing way and said, "Calm down." Herrera violently shook it off. "Get your hand off me," he shouted. "Get your (bleeping) hand off me."

To which Kawakami replied, "Do you want to take a punch at me?"

"Yeah, I'd love to."

And then I heard Kawakami say, "I'd love to own part of this franchise," meaning if a Raider official slugged him he could sue.

Hey, kids, they don't teach you this stuff in Journalism 101. I may have missed the exact words in all the hub bub - things were kind of crazy - but I was very close.

Herrera continued to make his point. "Nothing was distributed in this room," he shouted. "Nothing. Nothing."

Herrera meant he didn't actually make the critical Kiffin article available, although according to sources, he directly handed it to one beat writer. According to my sources he let other beat writers know the article existed. So, technically he didn't hand it out, but he encouraged writers to know about it and read it.

The last thing I heard, Kawakami - bravely to my way of thinking -- told Herrera, "You're welcome to sue me."

Another fun day at the Raiders. And get this, I went to see the coach get fired, but a fight broke out, instead. The Raiders always provide.

For a more in depth look at this comic interlude at the Raiders, read my Tuesday column.

Comment: 1. The Raiders' organization? Tell me what could one possible say about an organization run by an 80 year old tyrant who walks around the practice field in a white athletic jump suit and bling bling hanging from his neck larger than what Fitty Cents has on. Could this possibly be normal, well-adjusted? 2. I agree with some of the posts here regarding the writer's becoming the story. I like Tim Kawakami's articles. He could have come out smelling much better had he not made himself the story. I will, however, give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he did not plan it this way. I will say with a certain degree of confidence that if he could do it again, he would not put himself so square in the middle; perhaps allow other journalists to validate him. 3. What is the first thing you would do if you got caught doing something stupid? If you are a "man" (or a woman of integrity), you would own up to it. However, typically, you would turn the table around and attack your accuser. We learn this in first semester college psychology class. 4. "From now on, you will pay me first for the privilege of buying game tickets from me; this, after I deserted you, the fans in the Bay Area, for eleven years. Instead of begging you for forgiveness, I'm going to stomp all over you dumb asses." Yet, the fans rushed to get in line to pay Al first for the privilege of paying Al later-.. THIS IS THE MINDSET OF RAIDER FANS. I have tons of friends who are Raider fans. From Monday through Saturday, they are lawyers, doctors, engineers, professors, iron workers, carpenters, teachers, salesmen. They lead normal lives, talk about normal things, behave in normal ways. ON SUNDAYS, it's like they open their skulls and take out their brains and put them in the frige. They become idiots. THERE IS NO EXPLAINING the mindset of a Raider fan. 5. Over a dozen sporting news reported on the existence of the distributed printout. ONLY A RAIDER FAN can be fooled into believing it never happened. (These are the same fans who paid Al for the privilege of paying Al later for --.. Eh, you get the picture.)

Comment: here's an excerpt from the article.... "How would you like to be the head coach of an NFL team, having just completed your first season - one in which most of your players felt there had been signs of progress despite a 4-12 record - and one day you show up to work and, on your desk, there is a letter drafted by your boss: 'I, Lane Kiffin, hereby resign - ' That's what happened to Kiffin back in January"

But if you and Timmy think you're at all abve any of this you're wrong. Simply put--you guys all thrive on it and force feed it to the rest of us. By the way...let's see the document.

Comment: Everyone involved in this STINKS...the writer and the Raider exec..most of the Bay Area writers have a bias towards the OTHER team in the Bay, and it's evident Tim takes his little pot shots, but the Exec is classless as well...no one wins, and judging by the writers in the room, Bay Area Journalism sure could use more MINORITIES covering the teams here in the area rather than some SoCAL/East Coast transplant bringing their SMARMY, yuppy-ish attitudes with them

Comment: This is hilarious. Watching people try and defend the Raiders is like watching people trying to defend Enron. What don't you all understand? Herrera put copies of the article in the room...and said "Hey, take a look at this." It's like when you go to Vegas and the dealer can't technically "take" your money so you have to put it on the table first. The dealer's taking your money either way. Herrera's spreading bad press about Kiffin either way.

Comment: you know, the raiders are a bad joke, but it is clear to me guys like you and tim really enjoy playing games with words and insults to the oakland raiders, while you will say no, it is crystal clear you can't stand them and their "spoiled brat" coach or davis "the psychopath" ...yet you write about the 9ers who are as lame as the raiders in a similar vane with a easier division and conference, you write well " we just don't know about mike nolan" despite him being there now on his 4th yr,and the fact he never got close to running a franchise and was fired 4 different times as a dcoord- and when he couldn't get a job in the NFL he took a job as a wr coach with billick in b-more- yet you never hear it from the likes of you-or the fact he seems more concerned with a nice suit then the know all of his temas shortcomings immediately after his team failed yet again- Tim is your friend? ooh how sweet- tim, says he would love to own part of the franchise? So in your worls this is fine? well of course- but if it was someone else? say the niners- differtent opinion huh? Tim K is always trying to be cute with his BS,tim brings noting but cynicism and innuendo to his writing, but hey we got a white house and congress that lies to us daily and no one asks questions. BRAVO- Great work. I expect no reply, that would mean you have class and dignity.

Comment: Lowell - On your blog last Thursday you wrote this: On Wednesday, an official for the Raiders passed out to the media a column the team had xeroxed. The column was highly critical of coach Lane Kiffin. In other words, the Raiders were officially taking a position anti their coach. Your post was very clear as was Tim Kawakami's. Now John Herrera is saying this is not true. I am curious, there should be no gray area here. Did they xerox the article and pass it out or did they not? It seems a simple thing to answer.

Comment: Sad to see a "professional" team reduced to sending goons in, although I am a hockey fan. Let Al Davis come in and defend the organization, although we all know that won't happen because it would tarnish his "genius" label. Love to see Herrera have a go with someone closer to his size, or at least file a lawsuit over the lies, or are they truths??

Comment: Raider Fans: I'm a Raider Fan. Wake up. Our team is an embarrassment! There's no conspiracy against it! Al Davis is sick, and his staff are bad people. I've seen the video. John Herrera is a bad guy, he needs to be punished by the NFL! Don't forget what AD did to our hero's in the past (when he was "sane"), like Stabler, Marcus, Madden, Gruden, etc. Noone can be bigger than Al. And now that he's "lost it", it's even worse. Raider Nation, you need to stand up and say you've had enough!

Comment: Kamakazi is a punk and can't/couldn't back up his shoddy reporting. The type of bitch that talks a lot of smack until someone gets in his face then backs down like the little girl he apparently is. Hey Lowell tell your sweetheart Kamakazi to grow a set and man up to the fact that he lied in print.

Comment: Raiderhater, judging by your name I think that you lack any perspective on this issue. The issue isn't the details of the "Hererra-ESPN article fiasco" , but Kawakamis total lack of professionalism. How many times do we see sportswriters get into it with coaches and players and they rarely try to stand toe to toe with them, instead they come at them with facts and solid inoformation. You notice in the video Tim is looking to a blond woman to confirm the story , but she heard it from someone else second hand. So now Mr. Kawakami is relying on heresay. He also makes it no secret of his intense dislike for the Raider organization, much like yourself. I am not apologizing for Mr. Hererra, but I am saying that Tim Kawakami blew it and his whole career will be summed up by this incident where he showed an incredible lack of maturity, professionalism, and intelligence. I mean come on, he sounded like a 4th grader. Nice legacy Tim.

Comment: I'm all country, and I believe in a good shot to the jaw can be appropriate. People who think they can be mean and cruel with words without repercussion are due a knockout punch. Usually this occures on the playground before your 18 but some people live sheltered lives that makes them think they can act with impunity. Yes, you may win a law suit if your over 18, but social justice can be worth it. If you are one of those people just don't be surprised if you meet someone that doesn't mind being on probation for three years if they know that you will have a snoring/sleeping problem for the rest of your life. People commit crimes, and often happily.

Comment: "Herrera meant he didn't actually make the critical Kiffin article available, although according to sources, he directly handed it to one beat writer. According to my sources he let other beat writers know the article existed. So, technically he didn't hand it out, but he encouraged writers to know about it and read it." I hate the Raiders and Al Davis, but boy, that's a lot of fancy footwork you're doing, Lowell. So, technically, Herrera wasn't wrong? All this over Kawakami, whom I believe to be a person who lacks quite a bit in the integrity, maturity, and intellectual department. I mean, how old are you, Tim, and John? That interaction and this column say a lot about the lot of you.

Posted By: raiderhater (22/09/2008 9:08:27 PM)
Comment: What a sad and pathetic organization! The NFL should dissolve this franchise. Though the fans defending this clown Hererra are most pathetic. Handed out photocopies or encouraged reporters to look at the article online - what's the difference? Hererra is not a supporter of Kiffin and that's the point Kawakami made.

Comment: I'm sorry for my last post. I now realize I root for an awful team and that reporters are doing their job,; something our FO hasn't done since we went to the Super Bowl. The media may not always write the nicest things about the Raiders, but the Raiders are the most unprofessional organization in the league, both on and off the field.

Posted By: jj (22/09/2008 8:26:46 PM)
Comment: Girls like you really know how to piss people off. You and your media cohorts are reeling from the fabricated stories you all makeup. So, you lie like the little girls you are and feel stupid from it. You're a moron. You'll continue to write your garbage as that is all you know how to do. When there's a Raiders press conference you all band together like a bunch of sheep running from the big bad Al. And since you can't make anything of your own live, you try to detroy someone elses. Seriously, how many other head coaches talk to the owner on a daily basis? Or weekly? So what if he doesn't talk to him. Write about something you do know...something like giving birth or getting your first training bra. Oh, and you'll probably think of this as a personal attack, but realy; isn't that exactly what you've done. I mean, you don't write about the game; but then again how could you if you were out shopping with the girls?

Comment: The comments here are priceless. It's funny to see the raiders fans stick their heads in the sand and pretend that Kawakami is the biggest problem with this organization. On another note, good to see the rats not jumping from a sinking ship. LOL

Comment: I found this whole thing quit repulsive. Having watched all the videos and knowing the disdain that Mr. Kawakami holds for the Raiders organization I am not surprised. He routinely goes on local radio and blasts the oranization ,and in his SJMN column. How does he expect the Raiders staff to treat him? You said it yourself ,Hererra did not distribute the article. So in fact Mrs. Kawakami was incorrect and was calling Hererra a liar. So to recap Mrs. Kawakami routinely calls your baby ugly , and then shows up and stands in front of you and calls you a liar, seems to me he deserved what he recieved. Instead of Mrs. Kawakami resorting to elementary comments meant to antagonize, he should have done his job. Theirs a novel idea. Maybe he could have shown a shred of professionalism and said, okay Mr. Hererra, if we are wrong please tell us your side. Then you go do your due dilligence and actually work a little and get some witnesses and come back at him like a professional, not like the 4th grade school girl he did. When I read a sports column I want the facts, with proof. I don't want to read about a reporter getting into an arguement , and then another reporter writing about it. In my opinion both parties should be ashemed of how they acted, and BOTH parties share equal blame. Mr. Cohn and Mr. Kawakami have the name "reporter" or "columnist" attached to their name, but in reality if you read their columns,( I subscribe to the PD, get Kawakamis stuff on line) with any regularity they are both little more than glorified TMZ reporters, who don't seem to have a very deep knowledge of sports at all but prefer to write about all the negative aspects fo ALL the local franchises. If you think because you are a 49er, A's, Giants, or Warriors fan that you are immune to these hacks daily drivel you are quit incorrect. They spread their dislike for all local sprots pretty evenly. In all fairness they do OCASSIONALY write a positive column , which prompts me to choke on my oatmeal out of sheer shock. So in conclusion, Mr. Cohn and Mr. Kawakami, let's try to do our jobs, cut the theatrics and BS that you all seem to think is funny but in reality shows a total lack of proffessionalism on both your parts and write some articles that are thought provoking and intelligent instead of negative and mean spirited.

I bet Kawasaki or whatever his name is got picked on consistently in high school. He has that look to him. Maybe that's why he carries so much hostility in his columns. THAT'LL GET 'EM BACK, KAWASAKI!
